The Hult Prize takes on global humanitarian challenges and simultaneously pursues large, untapped markets of opportunity–brings together motivations and themes of profitability for sustainability. This year students are challenged to efficiently harness the power of energy to transform the lives of 10 million people.  With rounds of elimination taking place–from the internal campus rounds to the regional competition–teams from around the world will be competing to make it to the finals and deliver  their pitches in front of an esteemed international audience in New York. Pieced together through our own student experiences of watching, heres a global summary of the 2018 Hult campus rounds and the Hult teams whove made it through to the regionals. Boston Campus Written by Reina Adriano The Hult Prize at the Boston Campus saw 4 out of 19 teams made it to the semi-finals: Humane Energy, Ecolution, Aasha, and Amal-Ray of Hope. Going where no one has before,  Amal-Ray of Hope believe there is a way to bring together seawater electrolyte and a Galvanic battery to light up peoples lives. Ecolution, on the other hand, focused their attention on the aftermath of Nepal earthquake in 2013 and specifically, examined food loss during natural disasters. Results on a global scale were alarming and so the team devised a refrigeration unit, called the Ecobox. Running on off-grid electricity, the Ecobox would preserve food–serving to benefit not only farmers now, but also in a time of need. Humane Energy bagged the runner-up position as they pitched urine as a new source for power generation and. Judges applauded the team and with the creativity of their concept. Winning team: Aasha Aasha, meaning hope, are this year’s Hult Boston finalist. Dedicated to building a better world, Aasha is using virtual reality to address everyday problems farmers face. Utilizing both  OffGridBox and solar power, Aasha aims to eradicate some these challenges through increasing access to water as the  key solution. Judges of the Boston campus were fascinated with the different pitches by the students. One judge encouraged all the student teams to keep hold of the passions and ambitions they showed and emphasized this was only the beginning of the journey to making an impact. Another judge exclaimed: â€Å"Every adversity presents an opportunity† -Hult Prize Judge, Boston London Campus Written by Bea Yabut, Master of International Business Across the pond, the London Campus proved to be a true showcase of innovation and global thinking. 23 student teams participated this year, with three shortlisted for the semifinals: Teams ENPOV, NEBULA, and 3NERGIA. All three expressed how what had helped them most was their classes at Hult.   Trevor Bauder of Team 3NERGIA said that â€Å"it was actually about probably three weeks ago when we actually came up with the idea, however  with the first idea we realized the further we went along with it, the more complications we found.† Applying problem-solving lessons and models  learned in class, teams referenced how they leaned on strategic theories to guide them from idea formulation to execution. Team NEBULA, on the other hand, was bent on using fog catchers to produce water for rural areas struggling to access water. Nitin Gaba, one of the team members, believes they can turn dry lands into flourishing farmlands just by squeezing out a bit of the sky to provide water for crops to grow. â€Å"This is just the start of the beginning of what can be achieved with our product,†Ã‚  said Nitin. The London panel of judges included Yoav Gross, Jonathan Crook, Marc Ortmans, Sabrina Palme, Andre Quintanilha, Eleonora Ferrero, Gareth Walsh, William Annandale, Rosemary Harper, Jonathan Munday, Nitin Sukh, Ajit Kumar, and Elena Mariotti. Before the winner was announced, Ortmans praised students for their commitment and stated, â€Å"its worth noting that while the motivation is initially for the prize, you’ll see people not just follow up with the online version but also just take the idea forward anyway of their own volition so they come on out and find funding.† Winning: Team ENPOV The winning team was Team ENPOV who pitched a two-part product and service solution to increase rural mobility. They designed a hybrid electric tricycle that uses both pedal and solar power to run. Aiding the product, the team also presented their plans to roll out pedal powered milling stations that double as bicycle repair hubs. The team shared how they actively sought out feedback from their Hult mentors–Evangelos Markopoulos, Daniel Rukare, Eli Bohemond, Nikhilesh Sinha, and Ronan Gruenbaum–to help mold their idea. Hanny Semere from Team ENPOV said that team plans to take on planning to test launch their product in Ethiopia. San Francisco campus Written by Ivana Sinibaldi and Nga Ying Alberta Mok The 2018 Hult San Francisco campus round did not disappoint. From the 21 teams that participated, the finalists were The Multiverse, H2All, Infinaqua, Shield, and Conexus.  H2All and Infinaqua proposed a user-friendly solution to purify contaminated water into drinking water. Whereas Shield and Conexus tackled Indias sanitary situation by proposing eco-friendly toilet cubicles. The judges were Carlos Baradello, Federico Baradello, Sheryle Bolton, Prince Ghuman, Kati Kallins, Ted Ladd, David Lehr, Isabelle Lescent-Giles, Avery Lyford, Annalisa Belliss, Ben Cooper, Gert Christen, Dave Epstein, Jorge Zavala, David Stephens, Muhammad Yunus, Ileana Facchini, Mitch Shapiro, Shahand Esmaeili, Olivier Kaeser, and AC Ross. â€Å"There is a lot of mixed feelings, when it comes to the presentations and seen everyone prepared and nervous,† exclaimed Anna Carolina, one of the finalists with their team Conexus. After deliberation, Team H2All were awarded the winners. Their pitch showcased a compact and user-friendly device that generates chlorine to kills bacteria and purify water. To ensure safety for all users, H2All also developed a toolkit and indicator to monitor any harmful levels of chlorine. The team now plans to contact relevant governmental agencies in Algeria, Colombia, India, Madagascar, and Senegal. Dubai campus Written by Eesha Fantu and Brenda Raez Solari Amazing ideas striving to change the world were presented from 45 students Hult Dubai students. Represented by a mixture of Master, MBA, and Executive MBA students, Genr8, Piezo, Sundrop, Phoenix Solar Case Charger, and LightWay made the cut into the semifinals. The panel of judges had a vast diversity of experience and included Andrea Skerritt, Deepak Rajgopaul, Derek Carlson, Hans Henrik Christensen, Jose Jimenez, Karl W. Feilder, Michael Nates, Ross Daines, and Tena Pick. The winning team was Genr8, a team formed by Executive MBA students with entrepreneurial, engineering, marketing and IT backgrounds. The team is formed by Abdullah Al Mansoob, Aitor Agirregabiria, Olivier Ruff, and Mathapelo Mzizi. In today’s society there are many gender and social stereotypes that remain a prevalent part of the advertising tactics of the media. In the particular ad that I have chosen are examples of gender stereotypes that I would like to analyze and discuss using Douglas Kellner’s article â€Å"Advertising Images†. Kellner states that the tobacco industry in both the past and present use subliminal messages with the intention of portraying lifestyles and choices to the American public. Cigarette ads in particular, Kellner argues, â€Å"contribute to identity formation in†¦show more content†¦The fact that the woman is well-dressed and seemingly high society also adds to the desire of the â€Å"everyman† to attain â€Å"their very identity† (Kellner, 189) from the influe nces of this ad. What woman wouldn’t want power, status, perfect features, and men falling at her every move? And, of course, this can all be attained simply by smoking Camel cigarettes. Similarly the men are also being shown â€Å"socially desirable and meaningful traits† (Kellner 189). Men are being shown an existence where they could attain everything they so desire, a beautiful and sexy woman, a great job, as evidenced by their classy attire, and a happy lifestyle devoid of care and worry. These are definitely all characteristics that men strive to attain, and the ad is also promoting its product at the same time. There are two interpretations given of men in this ad. The first is that if men find a woman who smokes Camel cigarettes they will have everything they desire. The second is that if men purchase Camel for themselves, they can obtain everything. In either interpretation the existence of Camel is involved but the follow-up action is up to the individual con sumer as to whether he chooses to use the cigarettes or not. Are Art Woks Forgeable Essay I believe that some art works are forge-able and others are not. This depends solely on the type of work the art is, for example a painting may be forged but a piece of music may not. Paintings can be seen as to be finished when the original artist finishes painting, after this the act of creating the artwork is complete. Therefore if another artist paints the same thing, exactly identical to the original, it is said to be forged. By looking at these 2 paintings side by side, they may appear to be identical, and even a professional artist may not be able to tell which is the original and which has been forged. This makes it hard to argue that one is real and the other forged, as we may be unable to tell the difference between the 2 pieces until some one informs us as to which was painted by whom. Because they may look identical to an observer, does this mean that they are both as aesthetically pleasing as each other? Or is that dependent in who has painted it and why? I believe that the aesthetic value within a painting or sculpture is not only to do with what happens when one simply looks at it but also what a person feels or experiences while looking at the painting. Another factor may be what the original artist wanted to portray in this piece of art. The fundamental thing to consider in determining forgery is â€Å"intent to deceive†. So for example a layman attempting to pass one of his paintings off as a Picasso, is deliberately deceiving as he is claiming to be something he is not. In contrast an orchestra performing apiece by Beethoven is not forgery as it was written to be performed and they are not claiming that it is an original piece, they are simply performing the piece Beethoven composed. Taking music as an example of an artwork that cannot be forged, we look at the issue of composer and the actual performance. Is the artwork complete after a composer finishes writing the score for a particular piece? This cannot be true as then the piece will never have been performed or heard by an audience. In this sense we can described it as being a 2 stage art work. We may describe paintings and other artworks similar to these such as sculptures and even buildings autographic, if any duplication of them is said to be a fake. Thus we may describe music as allographic and therefore cannot be forged. To discuss this question we must first look at a definition of sex. This may be difficult as sex can refer to a number of things, especially if we are talking about sexual activity rather than sex in general. In the traditional sense of the word, sex is described as penile-vaginal intercourse (PVI) between a heterosexual male and female partner. This view has been widely criticized over the past number of years by many philosophers. This view is very heteronormative and therefore excludes all other forms as sex, such as oral or anal sex, which many would describe as a type of sexual activity. Sex in the broader sense of the term would include acts such as oral and anal sex, although these acts may only involve one partner’s sexual organs. The difference between these forms of sex and PVI sex can mainly be seen through the significance that people place on them. For example many heterosexual couples may engage in non-penetrative sex as an alternative to PVI to avoid pregnancy or preserve their virginity, also they might use these forms of sexual activity before having full sex. Appellant companies in the High Court of Australia are business developers who sued respondents in the Supreme Court of New South Wales for their loss from alleged negligence of the State Planning Authority and the Council of the City of Sydney, in the preparation and publication of a plan for the redevelopment of the Woolloomooloo area of Sydney City, and also for failing to warn the appellants of the subsequent abandonment of the plan. The Council and the Authority did not induce any developer to buy property in simply saying "this plan is feasible," the High Court said. In the case at bar, such duty of care did not result between the giver of information and the intended user because it could reasonably be expected that the recipient would seek independent advice before relying on the statement, especially for a serious business purpose. The case is relevant and supports the proposition. The proximity relationship (second requirement) was all the more appreciated because distinctions were made between private and public officials and their functions. The first two marked by Republican presidencies, the third, and longest of the periods, a Democratic era, and finally a return to Republican control of the presidency with the Reagan Revolution. When looking at each era, a few things are evident; one or two great presidents define every one of these time periods, those presidents' party is the dominant party of the era, one bad presidency or event can end the era, and that in between each era there is some form of realignment.It is these conditions meshed together that create a pattern of presidential dynasties to exist in America. The top 10 presidents in history are (in order) FED, Teddy Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Wilson, Truman and Eisenhower. Progressive Era, New Deal, Great Society, Ergonomics), a single party controlling the House, Senate, and White House, and the emergence of a third party. â€Å"To bring about a realignment, the new issue must be one that cuts across the existing line of party cleavage. -James Conduits . Each of these eras had a cross cutting issue that divided the country, and therefore needed someone to unify them. Lincoln had to deal with slavery, both the System of 1896 and the New Deal had to deal with economic hardship. The Great Society had to face the issue of race in America once again. Each of these issues divided the existing parties forcing individuals to realign based on new party beliefs. The issue can't be a small issue, such as a setting a national driving age, it must be popularizing that everyone must pick a side, like the issue of slavery during the Civil War.R ealignment causes old cleavage issues to fade away. This can be seen today because the New Deal is no longer a dividing issue among people, while in the sass's and sass's it divided Republicans and Democrats across the country. A third party arises when both major parties in power straddle the issue. The third party forces one of the two major parties to adopt the issue and if not the third party rises power (e. G. Republicans and slavery during the sass's). The New Deal era is the best example of a realigning election. Franklin Roosevelt won 472 electoral votes and 57. 4% of the vote .In addition to the presidential election, the Democrats made big strides in Congressional elections. Democrats gained 90 seats in the House and nine in the Senate , signaling a major shift in issues for the At-enact people. WILL WE ENTER A NEW PRESIDENTIAL ERA OR HAVE WE REACHED THE END? Barack Obama is not a disciple of the Reagan Revolution, if anything he is a disciple of the New Deal. Does this me an the Reagan Revolution is over? Is Obama the beginning of a new era, dominated by Democrats? Or have we reached the point where the patterns are over and there will no longer be a dominant party in America?If you look solely at history it points towards the emergence of â€Å"The Obama Era† of the American presidency. Obama was president when the United States exited the recession, much like FED and McKinley. When he was first elected in 2008 it was the highest percentage of voter turnout since 1968, signaling the potential of it being a realignment election . The beginning of Beam's first turn was filled with active legislating, including the passing of the Affordable Care Act. All of these events fit into James Squint's Theory of Partisan Realignment. What about today's current political conditions?Yes, many of the conditions that existed during Beam's first term are similar to the pattern of other presidential eras, faction of the conservative right. The Tea Party fits i n line with the small government beliefs of the Reagan Revolution and not Beam's belief in a large, active federal government. If the Tea Party does rise to power its ideologies would be a shift from Beam's. In addition to the third party not aligning with Beam's views, their influence has been steadily decreasing over time. Secondly, there is no outbreak of political activity.The opposite is true as both the House and Senate find themselves gridlocked, unable to pass any legislation. Figure 3 The most recent Congress has been the least productive of the past 32 congresses . This is in part due to straight line partisan voting by members of Congress when both the House and Senate are almost evenly split in membership as is. During the previous presidential eras either members of Congress were able to work with each other to pass legislation or one party dominated the government so it was possible force any legislation through Congress.These conditions no longer exist as the United S tates Government becomes more and more popularized. Where does all of these leave the future America? It is always safe to look back because history does have a tendency to repeat itself, but with the current conditions it isn't likely that Democrats will hold the White House for a long time. Since Gallup began monitoring presidential approval ratings, starting with Harry Truman, the two presidents who have defined their respective eras, Reagan and Johnson, have both had average approval ratings above 50%, 52. 8% and 55. 1% respectively. Beam's current average its below 50% at 48% .A president with an approval rating less than 50% isn't going to set the tone for future presidents if less than half the nation approves of him. Another strike against an â€Å"Obama Era† is following the 2008 election there was potential for realignment, but it never actually happened. Movements such as Occupy Wall Street faded away while the Tea Party's voice only got stronger. The Democrats had a chance to grab hold of the government but didn't take it. In the following 2010 midterm elections the Republicans picked up a net of 63 seats to gain back control of the House and a net of six seats in the Senate.This isn't to say that it is impossible for President Obama can't be the start of a new era of Democratic presidents but given recent history it is unlikely. CONCLUSION As President of the United States one has the potential to shape the nation. The electorate rewards these presidents (Lincoln, both Roosevelt, LB], and Reagan) by electing presidents who emulate those same positive ideologies. This led to the creation of eras of dominance by a single party. These eras produced some of most prosperous times in American history. However, the time of single party dominance has ended.The government has become more popularized, which has led to partisan gridlock. The people have been losing faith in the government to actually get anything done, which seems to be a result of ne w popularization, illustrated by the â€Å"Do- nothing Congress†. As a result the electorate changes its views and votes for the other party hoping they will actually be able to break the gridlock in government. This is not to say there will never be another great president like Lincoln or Roosevelt again, but the time of presidential eras is reaching its end, unless the federal government becomes less popularized.
